About David Lawrence
Utilizing decades of experience as a geologist and business leader, David Lawrence formerly held the position of executive vice president with Shell Upstream Americas in Houston with responsibilities including exploration, gas monetization and new business development. Under his leadership, Shell made 10 significant discoveries in the Gulf of Mexico and Latin America, and established major new positions in both conventional and unconventional gas and liquids plays in Canada, the US and Latin America. In addition, Lawrence spearheaded LNG, gas to liquids, and gas to transport projects in the Americas.
Following early career positions in Shell's research group, David Lawrence began his management tenure in the early 1990's with Shell as Chief Geologist and New Play Manager in the Gulf of Mexico. He led the early stages of major deepwater exploration joint venture plays, including what are now the successful Nakika and Perdido trends. He then initiated a new business, Shell Offshore Properties and Capital, focused on producer financing and acquisitions and later moved on to lead Shell Find and Development Company in New Orleans, bringing six exploration projects to first production Subsequently, David Lawrence became vice president of exploration and development with Shell EP in Houston and New Orleans. During his tenure in this role, Shell delivered ten deepwater and two shelf development projects to first production and brought four deepwater projects to development sanction. Onshore, he contributed to Shell's acquisition and development of a significant interest in the Pinedale field in Wyoming, which soon grew into one of the largest gas fields in the United States.
An internationally experienced businessman, David Lawrence later contributed to Netherlands-based Royal Dutch Shell for many years by providing senior leadership in multiple areas including corporate strategy, investor relations and global exploration. His accomplishments as executive vice president of global exploration included Prelude and other major gas discoveries in Australia, new entries into unconventional gas in the US, Canada, China and Europe, significant discoveries in Nigeria, the Gulf of Mexico, the Far East, Kazakhstan and Oman and major new play positions in Latin America, the Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, Australia, Africa and the Mideast.
David Lawrence earned his master of science and doctorate in geology from Yale University. While a graduate student, he garnered such honors as the Estwing and Orville Awards. Earlier, he studied at Lawrence University, from which he graduated magna cum laude with his bachelor of arts in geology. Since completing his education, Mr. Lawrence has written numerous published papers and chapters on issues linked to geology and the petroleum industry.
